Quack Exposed: James B. Adams

James B. Adams is a President’s Professor at Arizona State University. He is the director of the autism/asperger’s research program (that is what it is called, not my words). He currently holds a post at the South West College of Naturopathic Medicine. He is also president of the Autism Society of Greater Pheonix. On top of all that, he is also the co-chair for the Autism Research Institute‘s advisory committee. He has received a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award from President George Bush in 1996. He has been trying to cure autistics for years. He has also was a speaker for Autism One.

In 1984, Adams earned his bachelors degree from Duke University in physics. He also earned his Masters of Science and PhD in materials engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Adams was a former assistant of engineering and associate professor of engineering from 1989 to 1996 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1989 to 1996. He then became an associate professor at Arizona State University.

Adams had an interest in Autism. This is because his daughter Kim was diagnosed in 1994. He suspects it is caused by vaccines and he stopped vaccinating her after diagnosis.

He hypothesized that heavy metals, especially cadmium and mercury, played a role in the development of autism. He advocates the treatment of chelation therapy. He goes on to say that elevated testosterone levels are linked to the depletion of gluthion. He said it resulted with increased susceptibility to heavy metals. He cited a study by Simon Baron- Cohen that had “major logical and factual flaws,” according to some researchers.

In 2015, Adams Founded Autism Nutrition Research Center. This non for profit puts out more supplement marketed to autistic children. There has already been an adverse effect from his supplements.

In 2019, Adams and a group of researchers published a study that claims that Fecal Microbiota Transplant therapy has success with autistic people. He has a hard time getting funding for his research, he has a go fund me campaign to fund his research! https://www.gofundme.com/f/microbiota-transplant-for-children-with-asd

He presented this study at Autism One:

In a 2006 NBC News interview, Adams stated that acrodynia, a condition that affected children more than a century ago, was caused by mercury containing teething powder. He claimed that the “symptoms of acrodynia were pretty similar to the symptoms of autism.” A paper published in the medical journal Pediatrics, notes many major differences between the two conditions.

In 2016, Adams posted an advertisement for the anti vaxxer documentary Vaxxed on of of ASU’s offical Facebook pages. After receiving some well recieved clap back, he added the disclaimer “represents only one side of the MMR-vaccine controversy.” He later admitted that he had not seen the movie before making this post! It was later deleted by ASU’s request. He continued to promote the film as president of Autism Society of Greater Phoenix. He denied that he is an antivaxxer but says he believes in rare cases it may cause autism. This is despite replicating results numerous times in different studies that proves quite the opposite.

He has been trying to cure autistic people instead of listening to them. He is very dangerous to the autistic community.

Endorsed by Autism Speaks

On June 13, 2019, an opinion piece about ASU’s FMT studies was published on Autism Speaks’s site. “A recent study at Arizona State University looked at the long term effects of a microbiota transplant, or fecal transplant in 18 children with autism and gastrointestinal problems. This paper is a longer term follow up to the initial 2017 study, where participants had Microbiol Transfer Therapy, to see if their symptoms changed two years later”

This study was open label which means everyone knew they were getting the real thing. This study is not valid.

Instead of endorsing supports for autistic people, they endorse poop transplants to “improve” the autistic and make them more neurotypical.

The FMT results sound promising for a martyr or warrior parent but the study was not nonbiased. There are connections between Adams and Jeff Bradstreet,  the anti-vaxxer movement, the abandoned chelation therapy study, Generation Rescue, Autism Research Institute and Autism One

Connection between Adams and Bradstreet:

Adams and Jeff Bradstreet were investigators in at least three previous studies together:

A Case-Control Study of Mercury Burden in Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders

Safety and efficacy of oral DMSA therapy for children with autism spectrum disorders: Part A – Medical results

The Severity of Autism Is Associated with Toxic Metal Body Burden and Red Blood Cell Glutathione Levels

These studies are always to find the cure or “fix” autistics. They research biomedical or pseudoscience methods to “treat” autistics.

Connection between Adams and the Antivaxxer Movement

When posting on the official Facebook page for Arizona State University, he was promoting the controversial documentary Vaxxed. He later added a disclaimer explaining that the documentary only covers one side of the MMR controversy.

Adams was also interviewed by Del Bigtree. Bigtree was the creater of Vaxxed.

Connection to the Abandoned Chelation Study in 2006

In 2006, Susan Swedo launched a study to prove that chelation was an effective treatment for autism. The National Institute of Health halted this due to lab rats having brain damage from the treatment. The risks did not outweigh the benefits. TACA did show some resistance. They accused the NID of halting progress. They use anecdotal evidence which does not have any weight in these type of studies.

In the Book Outsmarting Autism (2019), both Adams and Swedo were mentioned. They were credited for working together on the First International Symposium on Microbiome Health. This was located at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute in Little Rock, Arkansas. Together they sought to design a therapy to modulate or manipulate their microbiomes. Microbiomes is the community of microorganisms that are in the gut.

Connection to Generation Rescue

One year after establishment, Autism Nutrition Research Center made a donation of supplements to Generation Rescue.

Connection to the Autism Research Institute

Adams is on the Science Advisory Panel at Autism Research Institute

They are still relying on parent reporting as proof of effectiveness of any treatments such as chelation which is very dangerous.

Connection of Adams, Bradstreet, and Swedo with Autism One

All three of these researchers have been presenters at Autism One. No surprise there!

  1. First thing is his list of patents and how much money he and his colleagues are making from what he is about to discuss. Then he talks about a parent who treated her childs GI problems as if it’s autistic nature was the same thing/intertwined with gut problems. The constant differentiation of the CHILDREN as a person with the WITH AUTISM as a condition like a physical illness is something he does not even notice. This tells me he sees all autistic characteristics as the same as a cough, sneeze or running nose is caused by a virus. Then We get this statement about bacteria being killed off, and ‘hyperactivity’ stopping. Like it is that simple in an autistic subject. Like you can quantify behaviours in terms of hyperactivity and being relatively ‘normal’ in your energy levels. So within five minutes he has shown a concept of being normal in relation to being autistic. This is only detailed in two ways. One is this concept of being hyperactive, which sounds like manic destructive screaming/smashing when really I think it was nothing more than lots of energy and they didnt look compliant or act like this idea of calm, chilled children that seems present. Secondly is a more vague notion about ‘autism symptoms’. No details are forthcoming save that the parents he mentions clearly have a concept of them in relation to the mysterious visions of ‘normal’ he keeps alluding to. So what I wonder about is what this divine normal state he seems to relate to, is. How and in what ways can a child be normal in relation to the autism symptoms? Children are hyperactive and get obsessive like we all can. See?In conclusion, watch out for when these people use frames of reference they don’t think twice about using. That they never bother to define because that's the way things are so there. Actually no, don’t take their terms for granted at all. Be suspicious of the way they relate to everything.

  2. Oh and by the way.At 6 minutes in he mentions how the reducing of reducing Gut Intestine problems seem to ‘reduce the symptoms of autism’. What I see this as meaning is that by detoxing a child, you get this stoned or chilled out reaction. What is interesting is that as usual with such people, the man says ZERO about this as a possible second explanation. It is normal for me to find such people in this world, to only have ONE EXPLANATION for everything. Why not a collection of theories? They never do…
